Carole wasn’t shallow. I made that comment because about the sack because her relationship with Russ was what I’d call “Body and Soul”. It started as a physical relationship and went on from there. She loved him physically and she believed he had a beautiful soul.

Gable did love her and vice versa. She certainly made herself indispensible to him and his life. But they were not physically that compatible. (It was not just by chance that they slept in separate bedrooms.) There relationship was as, Bill Powell told Larry Swindell, simply not of the same intensity as Carole’s and Russ’ had been – either physically or spiritually.

  2. I still wouldn’t say that Lombard preferred Columbo over Gable. If she did, why would she change her whole life around for Gable? And the way she looked at Gable in their photos (Not all of them are set up. You can tell!) that she loved him very much. I think she loved them both equally. He also loved her very much, and put her on a higher pedestal above everyone else. It’s just that he did not reciprocate all what she gave him due to his addiction to women (if there was rehab back in the day, he’d probably need to check in for that!). He probably tried to stop, but I don’t think he could help himself. This more than anything else, led people to doubt in their love. Gable did not know what he had until he lost her.

I also wouldn’t say that Gable was selfish. Many people have testified to the contrary. And remember, he was MGM’s star, so it was their responsibility to make him look as clean as possible (this did not only work with just Gable. This was for every single one of the stars on their roster). He had to look good so THEY can profit. They could care less about him, and it was all for Louis B Mayer. They were going to “fix” him, whether he liked it or not. Remember, Gable barely had a say in his own films (he did not want to do Gone With The Wind at all. It was just a business deal for MGM to get more money)and MGM made him into the he-man image. They gave every single star of theirs an image even if it was the total opposite of their actual personalities. MGM had to make sure its stars stuck to that image.

And about Loretta Young and Clark Gable’s daughter, he was willing to marry Loretta and publicly acknowledge his daughter, but she did not want to marry him.

Read Gable’s first provision in the last will found in the last chapter of Lyn Tornabene’s book “Long Live the King”. Compare it to the first provision in Carole’s last will.

Hmmm… I’d say that Carole was Clark’s true love, but whether or not he was hers is debatable.
There’s a lot of evidence to suggest that they were deeply in love. Carole Irene said that she changed a lot to please him. She took up his hobbies and whatnot. Now, I enjoy hunting, fishing and the same outdoors activities that Gable enjoyed. For Carole to take that up, she would definitely have to be devoted to Clark. The “outdoors” isn’t exactly easy to enjoy, and not meaning to sound sexist at all, I don’t know any female that actually enjoys hunting or fishing (that’s not to say that there are none, just that I don’t know of any).
So for Carole to take an interest, or even to feign an interest, in Clark’s interests is just one testament to her love for him. There’s also the testimonies given to them from other celebrities like Myrna Loy and Andy Devine which state just how devoted they were to each other.

I like the content on your blog a whole lot, but the background image is super-distracting and it makes it hard to read the text. I look forward to following your blog! Would you like to add me to your blogroll?

  6. Hello! I really wish I knew how to fade the background a bit but I really don’t…I actually pretty much stink at technology. And I did add you to my blogroll!
